Sell Diamonds

One of the first things that spring to mind on deciding to sell a diamond is – will my diamond be safe if I send it through the mail? The answer is emphatically yes – many people sell diamonds worldwide each day through the mail by registered, insured mail.

When purchasing a diamond a certificate is issued with it.
This is a grading report issued by an independent laboratory detailing the diamond’s weight, dimensions, colour, clarity and cut. The GIA (Gemological Institute of America) and EGL (European Gemological Laboratory) are the undisputed international authorities on diamond grading and gem identification.

Different to this is a diamond appraisal which is the opinion of an individual appraiser as to the quality of a diamond and his/her opinion as to the monetary cost of replacing the stone for insurance purposes. A certificate is issued by an independent laboratory that has had one or more staff members evaluate the stone for its specific quality – it is simply the assessment of the lab as to the exact quality of the diamond you are selling. Any and every diamond can be certified but this does not increase its quality at all.

However, because the certification process costs money and certified diamonds are more desirable on the open market, a certified diamond is more valuable than a diamond of the exact same quality that does not have a certificate. So look for all the history, details and certificates you have before contacting anyone. Needless to say all diamonds have to be closely inspected before formulating an offer. Each diamond is unique! Most companies will buy and sell loose diamonds of all shapes and sizes as well as those in jewellery settings.

Bear in mind that when selling gold jewellery to an online gold buyer, they are not interested in the stones – so not only will they remove your diamonds from the jewellery before weighing the items, a lot of them won’t even return the stones – So please think very carefully before choosing this route in this case. I’d be tempted to sell my phone or some scraps of jewellery and save the diamonds for a specialist buyer.
