First question when selling gold jewellery – where and how do I start?
With gold prices at an all time high this is a very good opportunity to make some cash. To ensure you get the best price do some homework. If you could do with some extra cash (and who couldn’t?) take time to go through your gold jewellery and decide which pieces can go.
The higher the carat content the higher the price you will be offered – a carat is the measure of the purity of gold alloys. In the UK 22, 18, 14 & 9 carat are the most commonly found. In the Middle East (24 carat/pure gold) is the norm. As a starting point you may like to visit a local jeweller who may be willing to value your items but it’s worth shopping around as he may not be competitive when it comes to offering you a price as his overheads are much greater as are those of a pawnbroker.
If you sell to an online gold buyer they should get very close to the full gold value, but as always shop around for the best price and look for sites that display their prices.
We recommend you read our guide to selling gold online to avoid getting ripped off.
As a rule of thumb, hallmarked gold jewellery will generally raise approximately 80% of the spot price and unhallmarked around 70%. This is for solid gold jewellery without precious gems – usually there is only a very small resale value on these. So it is solely the weight of the gold without the stones.
3 things determine the price:-
The carat of the gold
The market value of gold (‘spot price’) this changes daily
The weight of the gold (which you can easily find out by putting your gold on some scales).
If you’re at all uncertain about selling your gold online but you’re still in need of some fast cash, I’d sell my phone. The Mobile Phone Websites almost all display the prices they are willing to pay on their sites, so you can be fairly confident that you’re not being taken for a ride.
